My LCHF clinic is set up somewhat like the Intensive Dietary Management clinic of Dr. Fung and Megan Ramos (Ontario, Canada). Every two to four weeks, we evaluate a certain number of people, in our case 12 to 14, and we gather them all in one room for an entire afternoon of teaching. Then, we do 1-hour follow-ups every two weeks at first, then once a month, in small groups of four. The teaching sessions are intense, with lots of material to cover. It gets serious. But it also tends to be fun, with lots of laughter. We can usually feel a sense of camaraderie emerging amongst our patients. They start to feel like they’re all in the same boat. They won’t be alone eating “weird” food (a.k.a. natural food), checking out grams of carbs on labels, and refusing a donut at work during a meeting. See the picture on the left below? The kids are wading into the ocean and aren’t very far into the ocean. My son is getting smacked in the face by a wave. That area where the waves are breaking can be rough. You can lose your footing. You might get knocked over or pushed into shore. More than once I’ve ended up covered in sand from getting stuck where the waves break. It’s exhausting to stay in that place where you are fighting the waves rolling in and standing against the waves pulling you back out. In the picture on the right, the kids have actually ventured beyond the waves breaking. Look how calm! They need to go 10 feet further in, but the waves are breaking BEHIND them. It’s calm where they are, and they are riding the gentle waves and laughing. They are more relaxed because they aren’t concerned about getting knocked down and coming up with a face full of sand or a bathing suit full of sand. Ties to the pharmaceutical industry are very common among physicians creating medical guidelines, according to a Globe and Mail analysis. This is a huge problem as the bias has the potential to skew the guidelines towards less efficient (or even unnecessary or harmful) treatments for patients. The Globe’s analysis found that financial conflicts of interest are commonplace on guideline committees. Forty-six per cent of the panelists involved in the nine guideline documents reviewed by The Globe received some funding from companies that might benefit from a positive mention of their drugs. In three cases, more than 75 per cent of the panelists declared a conflict. In two, the guidelines were financed directly by the pharmaceutical industry. It’s a bit like having a trial against a mafia boss, where 75 percent of the jury members admit to having recently taken money from the mafia. That would be a joke. That’s when it occurred to me, “Was he breathing?” I leaned over towards him but didn’t hear anything. Even though I didn’t want to wake him, worry began to rise up into fear, so I leaned closer. The suggestion of benefits reported in earlier meta-analyses is due to the inclusion of inadequately controlled trials. These findings have implications for current dietary recommendations. The “implications” basically are that the current dietary recommendations are wrong, rotten at the core, and need to change.
