Over the past 7 years, California clinicians have been amputating toes, feet, ankles and legs of patients with diabetes-related ischemia with much greater frequency than before, and public health officials, diabetes clinicians, and surgeons said they’re puzzled by the trend. MedPage Today: Diabetic Amputation Rates Soar in California, Nationally Clearly, the treatment of type 2 diabetes is not good enough at reversing the disease. We’re treating blood glucose, not the high insulin levels. A surgeon in the article sounds like he’s giving up, stating that “let’s not worry too much about amputating toes as they are just there for decoration”. Of course, he’s right that amputating more is worse, but having to amputate more and more body parts of people with type 2 diabetes is a clear sign that treatment is not working. As I navigated, I watched the gas gauge display that calculates how many miles per gallon the car is getting in real time.
