“If you want to save the world, veganism isn’t the answer”

The vegan diet has probably never been more popular than it is today. In a recent The Guardian article, farmer and author Isabella Tree discusses the effect of influential documentaries such as What the Health and Cowspiracy. These documentaries have thrown a spotlight on the meat and dairy industries, and convinced many people that cutting meat and dairy out of their diet equals a big favor to the planet and the environment. However, what these documentaries fail to portray are the environmental consequences of the vegan diet. So, what exactly happens to our environment when switching entirely to plant-based foods? If more people continue to turn to veganism, there will obviously be a need for more plants and less meat. This may lead to soil degradation, and soil loss is a major issue facing the world today, as Isabella Tree explains: Our ecology evolved with large herbivores – with free-roaming herds of aurochs (the ancestral cow), tarpan (the original horse), elk, bear,...

Is modern medicine a threat to public health?

How did it sound when a man, who had stopped taking all his meds 18 months after suffering a heart attack, wanted to participate in an Ironman event? Pretty alarming, was Dr. Aseem Malhotra‘s first thought. But after hearing the full story, he relaxed, he shares in this recent article published in The Guardian. I realised he had made an informed decision to stop the medication after suffering side effects, and instead had opted for a diet and lifestyle approach to manage his heart disease. His case is a great example of how evidence-based medicine should be practised. Unfortunately, our health-care system is focused on using medications to improve health outcomes, even when lifestyle interventions can be far more powerful. Sometimes, medications only lead to tiny benefits, and side effects outweigh the benefits. This is a huge issue in an overmedicated population, and it needs to be addressed. Giving patients the very best chance of improving their health will require a...

How Dolly turned her obesity and metabolic syndrome around

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Dr. Jason Fung: This week I’d like to share Dolly’s story. She has been able to take control of her health, losing over 100 pounds in the process. Interestingly, she hasn’t had problems with loose skin, which is our experience, too. In five years of the IDM program, I have not referred a single patient for skin removal surgery despite in some cases, like Dolly over 100 pounds (45 kg) of weight loss. There is very little data about why we see this phenomenon, although I suspect the body was burning the excess protein for energy. Here’s her story: Dolly: Let me start with the most heartfelt of thank you to Dr. Fung, Megan, Nadia and all the staff and members of the IDM program and Nadia’s LCHF/Keto Facebook Group. You have given me back my life, literally, and I will be forever grateful. The process is one of serious intent and diligent effort accompanied by joyful scientific curiosity and kind support. In a little over a year, I’ve gotten rid of 105+ pounds (48+ kg)...

The lucrative story of cotton seed oil

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Looking back over the last 40 years, it’s hard to understand how we could have been so gullible. We believed that fat, and more specifically saturated fat (found primarily in animal foods), was thought to increase cholesterol and cause heart disease. Instead, we should switch to ‘heart healthy’ vegetable oils, like cottonseed, corn, safflower and soy oils. But recent evidence suggests this was a Faustian bargain. The industrially processed seed oils were much, much worse. It was all a terrible mistake that began with Crisco. Cotton plantations for fabric were cultivated in the United States as early as 1736. Prior to this, it was largely an ornamental plant. At first, most cotton was home-spun into garments, but the success of the crop meant that some could be exported to England. From a modest 600 pounds of cotton in 1784, it grew to over 200,000 by 1790. The invention of the cotton-gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 led to a staggering 40,000,000 pounds of cotton production. ...
