“Will I never eat certain foods again?”

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Are there certain foods that I can never eat again? How do I best figure out my portion size on keto? How can I keep losing weight when on a plateau and struggling with anxiety? These and other questions are answered this week by our food-addiction expert, Bitten Jonsson, RN: Is it realistic to say there are certain foods I will never eat again? First, I was so excited to read your profile. I KNOW I’m an addict and even attended Overeaters Anon. Nothing ever worked because every food plan allowed me to eat my trigger foods. I’ve always felt like an alcoholic, but my alcohol is wheat and sugar. Now I know, I’m not nuts. Like a drug addict, I feel I need to say, “absolutely never!” to certain things, but people keep telling me that’s not reasonable or feasible. Elaine Hi Elaine, you are right and they are wrong. It is true that if we are sugar/flour addicts, there are food’s we can never eat without going back in our addiction and be sicker and develop more severe...

Supply and demand: Why fatty foods are getting more expensive

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

According to The Wall Street Journal, fatty foods are more expensive because fat (well, good fat) is in fashion. That is the gist of its article, published Tuesday in its “Markets” section. The Wall Street Journal: Your Avocados and Olives Are Pricier Because Fat Is In Fashion In some ways, it’s basic economics. When demand for a food rises – in this case, avocados, butter, olive oil, or salmon — prices increase while suppliers scramble to produce more of that item. The article reports that prices on these fatty goods are up as much as 60 percent in just five years. Eventually, as supply responds to the increase in demand, prices drift down. What is responsible for this increase in demand? Full-fat diets. The author explains: These changes in fortune reflect the broad dietary shifts of recent years. Many people have switched to eating more foods that are high in natural fats from high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets. And government agencies and nutritionists are...

A stellar op-ed, keto vs. WW, and the ‘Doritos towel bag’

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

This week, we summarize the top five news articles and studies in the low-carb realm, plus the wall of shame. A new op-ed published in Minnesota’s largest newspaper, the Star Tribune, christens the keto diet as “The risk-reversal diet.” With a very engaging style, the author focuses on the type 2 diabetes epidemic, including its shocking scale and crippling cost. He builds a strong case for his thesis: “Errant beliefs about food and health engineered a diabetes crisis, and a simple, sustainable way of eating can end it.” That way of eating is keto. A must read. According to CNN, Weight Watchers is “getting crushed by keto.” A surprisingly poor quarter led Weight Watchers’ CEO to mention a “keto surge” as one of the company’s challenges. Her company’s stock has tanked, down almost 80% from its high less than a year ago. Even bigger news: CNN also reports that a Wall Street analyst named Diet Doctor as part of the reason she is concerned about Weight...

Op-ed praises keto as ‘The risk-reversal diet’

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

A new op-ed published in Minnesota’s largest newspaper, the Star Tribune, christens the keto diet as “The risk-reversal diet.” Star Tribune: The risk-reversal diet Writer Paul John Scott begins with a focus on the type 2 diabetes epidemic, including its shocking scale and crippling cost. After laying out the depressing facts, what is his assessment? So if there’s a preventable illness that deserves our attention more than diabetes, it’s hard to imagine what that is. And yet our imagination when it comes to identifying the source of the illness is impoverished. Officeholders demand more “access to health care” (from the political left), or “freedom to choose your doctor” (from the political right). Few ask why we need so much diabetes care in the first place. Not to mention why “your doctor” doesn’t seem to have the tools to arrest diabetes. From there, Scott talks about the power of ketogenic diets to reverse type 2 diabetes. He mentions Virta...

Is Weight Watchers ‘getting crushed by keto’?

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

According to CNN, Weight Watchers is “getting crushed by keto”. A surprisingly poor quarter led Weight Watchers’ CEO Mindy Grossman to mention a “keto surge” as one of the company’s challenges in her call with Wall Street analysts. In the aftermath of reporting poor earnings and sales, the weight-loss company’s stock plunged more than 33 percent on Wednesday. In less than a year, the stock has lost more than 80 percent of its value. CNN Business: Weight Watchers is getting crushed by keto CNN reports that a “rival weight-loss service” called Diet Doctor is a challenging competitor to Weight Watchers: JPMorgan analyst Christina Brathwaite downgraded the stock to “underperform” last week and slashed her price target. One of the reasons? She was worried about competition from rival weight-loss service Diet Doctor, which is a proponent of keto. To be clear, we don’t see ourselves as a “weight-loss service”. We are a health company. We give inspiration...

Here are new inspirational stories from people who’ve taken the challenge: Feedback My name is Alana. I’m 31 years old and I live in Canada. In December I had my first child. During my pregnancy, I ate anything and everything I wanted. Less than 24 hours before giving birth, I weighed myself. I was 278 pounds (126 kilos). I knew there was no way my child weighed 100 pounds (45 kilos) so it was clear I gained a lot of weight in nine months. Five weeks after she was born I weighed myself again. I only went down to 254 pounds (115 kilos). I was so upset with myself for getting so big. I had enough. I used to be so fit and happy, always feeling good but I was now struggling with the fact I had let myself get this big. February third, 2019 I started the...

Diet Doctor Podcast #14 – Dr. Robert Lustig

323 viewsThe debate wages. Is a calorie just a calorie? Or is there something specifically dangerous about fructose and carbohydrate calories? To anyone who has experienced the benefits of a low carb lifestyle, the practical answer is obvious. But answering that question on a global scale and making meaningful changes to improve the health of millions of people is much more complex. That’s where Dr. Robert Lustig comes in. As a pediatric endocrinologist who is now armed with a law degree, Dr. Lustig has made it his mission to fight our health crisis on the legal and policy front. How Leonie successfully manages type 1 diabetes

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Leonie had been following the dietary guidelines and her educator’s advice for type 1 diabetes for 25 years when an idea hit her. Her carb loading before exercise did no longer make sense to her, so why not try a low-carb diet? This is Leonie’s very inspiring journey: I turn 65 this year and have had type 1 diabetes for 35 years. For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing competitive (pennant and social) racquetball. I was a conscientious, fit, healthy and well-managed diabetic who religiously followed the dietary guidelines and my educator’s advice, until about ten years ago (2009). The dietary guidelines included carbohydrate loading before exercise but ten years ago, I started to question the logic of having to insulin load before exercise. Doing this meant I risked going hypoglycaemic (low sugar) when I started playing racquetball because I still had active insulin onboard. To avoid this scenario, I needed to eat at least three hours earlier than my matches, which...

Is fat bad for our guts? Let’s ask the bacteria…

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

A new randomized study out of China is trying to tell us fat is bad for our microbiome, and the headlines came flowing. U.S. News: High fat diets do no favors for your gut bacteria NZ Herald: High fat diets hurt the helpful bugs within us Eurek Alert: High fat diet linked to unfavorable changes in gut bacteria and inflammatory triggers Should we believe it? No, not really. The study in question took 217 Chinese adults and randomized them into low-fat (20% of calories), moderate-fat (30%) and high-fat (40%) cohorts. Right away, red flags should be popping up in your brain. If the high-fat group is only eating 40% of their calories from fat, where are the rest of the calories coming from? 48% of the cohort’s calories came from carbohydrates. That hardly fits the criteria for a true “high-fat” diet. Haven’t we already learned that combined high-ish fat and high-carb diets tend to have the worst health effects? Adding fat to a system overwhelmed with high insulin from...

Antonietta lost 150 pounds on the keto diet

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Antonietta was severely overweight with lots of different health issues and was on a long list of drugs to get through her days. After her doctor had suggested surgery for her back problems, she knew the real solution was to lose weight. She started seeing a trainer that recommended the keto diet for optimal weight loss. This is Antonietta’s story: I am currently 48 years of age and began keto in 2015 and in 2017 almost two years later, I had lost a total of 150 pounds (68 kilos). I have maintained my 150-pound-loss as of today… I truly love the keto lifestyle and will never look back. It has been a true lifesaver for me. I was 321 (146 kilos) when I began my journey to a healthier life. From 236 to 236 pounds (107-146 kilos) I had tried over five different trainers, and always incorporated a low-fat low-calorie diet, none of which worked until I reached out to my trainer Jill Murphy at Mission Fitness. She not only incorporated a physical workout program but also...

What is the optimal fast frequency?

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

What is the optimal fast frequency? Can you fast with low blood pressure? Is type 2 diabetes caused by fat plugging the pancreas or via high insulin levels in blood? And, can a low metabolic rate be reversed? It’s time for this week’s Q&A about intermittent fasting and low carb with Dr. Jason Fung: Fast frequency I’ve found through various of your articles and videos that the 24-hour fast can be performed daily (Warrior Diet). I’ve also found the “mixing up” the duration of fasts is good so that the body doesn’t adapt. My question is on what frequency are three-day and seven-day fasts acceptable? For example, one 7-day fast per month and three 3-day fasts per month, 24-hour fasts the remainder? If you’re in general good health, a of couple weeks into the keto diet, 40 pounds (18 kilos) overweight having lost 20 pounds (9 kilos) already? Mark That’s a great question, but one with no easy answer. It all depends upon the person. It depends upon the specific...

Theories of aging

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

Simple single-celled organisms called prokaryotes, such as bacteria, are the earliest forms of life on earth, and still abundant today. Much later evolved the more complex, but still single-celled organisms called eukaryotes. From those humble beginnings came the multi-cellular life forms called metazoans. All animal cells, including humans, are eukaryotic cells. Since they share a common origin, they bear a resemblance to each other. Many molecular mechanisms (genes, enzymes, etc.) and biochemical pathways are conserved throughout the evolution towards more complex organisms. Humans share approximately 98.8% of their genes with chimpanzees. This 1.2% genetic difference is enough to account for the differences between the two species. It may be even more surprising, however, to learn that organisms as far apart as yeast and humans have many genes in common. At least 20% of genes in humans that play a role in causing disease have counterparts in yeast. When scientists spliced...

Post-PREDIMED, midlife inflammation, and ‘Ay, chihuahua!’

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

This week, we summarize the top five news articles and studies in the low-carb realm, plus some success stories. A post-PREDIMED world… Agarwal and Ioannidis weigh in (via this analysis in the journal BMJ) on lessons learned from the retraction of a landmark Mediterranean diet study, and the repercussions and way forward. Also, Vox asks how researchers will reassess the revised and reissued study, and raises questions about how other medical journals will deal with their newer studies that cite and rely on the old PREDIMED. MedPage reports on a new observational study, just published in Neurology, that finds elevated inflammation in midlife is associated with steeper cognitive decline, particularly memory decline. The subjects with the highest quartile of blood levels of a systemic inflammation marker experienced 11.6% steeper decline in memory than the subjects in the lowest quartile. This data comes out of Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort study, and suggests...
