Diet Doctor Podcast #2 – Health and longevity with Dr. Peter Attia

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

What would you change in your life if you could live forever? Ok, let’s be realistic. Not forever. But what about an extra five years? Ten years? Or how far would you go to ensure you would be healthy and vibrant until the day you die? That is the science of longevity. The inexact science I should add. Starting as a cancer surgeon and researcher, Dr. Peter Attia would never have predicted where his professional career would lead. After all, surgery is possibly the ultimate medical field for immediate satisfaction. See the disease, feel the disease with your own hands, and remove the disease. Longevity, on the other hand, is the opposite of immediate satisfaction. You never really know if you got it right. It’s educated guessing at best. So, why would someone change from specializing in surgery to specializing in longevity? That is just one of the many fascinating aspects of Dr. Peter Attia. One thing is clear about Peter. Whatever he does, he goes all-in. Whether...

Low-carb and keto news highlights

This week, we summarize the top five news articles and studies in the low-carb realm, plus the wall of shame. The CDC updates obesity data. What’s the number? Forty percent. 40% of US adults age 20-74 were obese in 2016. That number, in 1960, was just 13.4%. For children, between 2014 and 2016, both overweight (16.6%) and obesity (18.5%) continue to rise across all age groups and both genders, with one exception — teenage girls saw a slight improvement. The New York Times investigates an all-too-common problem in science: failure to report conflicts of interest that could bias authors’ perspectives.  “One of the world’s top breast cancer doctors failed to disclose millions of dollars in payments from drug and health care companies in recent years, omitting his financial ties from dozens of research articles in prestigious publications like The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet.” Corporate influence is a huge problem affecting not just...

Is it possible to lose weight without starvation? FREE Download: Ketogenic Diet Book » KetoVIP.

We often see headlines claiming that a particular food will either save us or kill us. The problem is that there’s usually no good science to support those headlines. Should journalists just stop writing about food studies? Kelly Crowe at CBC News asks this question in her latest article. The background is all the recent click-and-share health news. Journalists have written stories based on weak studies about how all alcohol consumption is bad for health, that cheese and yogurt protect you from death and that a low-carb diet could shorten your life. These news stories have been widely spread without being based on any strong evidence. The problem is that journalists want to make clickable headlines no matter what effects they may have on the people who read it. Unlike nutrition researchers, who are careful to report their findings associated with a specific outcome, journalists often skip the nuance in order to make these news stories. In an article published in JAMA last...
