Brian Wansink is a celebrity scientist and the author of the book “Mindless Eating”. His research lab has produced hundreds of studies about how our surroundings affect our eating. For example, that we allegedly eat more when served food on bigger plates. It’s interesting stuff and I read his book and found it quite interesting. Unfortunately, lately Wansink and his lab has gotten into trouble. It seems like they have been a bit too interested in finding “cool” scientific findings to present to the media, at any price. Seemingly, they’ve been less interested in more mundane things, like making sure their findings are not just made up fantasies. The study was called ‘Association of Animal and Plant Protein Intake with All-Cause and Cause-Specfic Mortality‘, and published in JAMA Internal Medicine. This took data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a large prospective cohort. This means they followed 131 342 patients over decades, asking them what they ate. Some of them will die or develop other illnesses and then they look at the database collected to see if there are any associations.     Does intensive drug treatment of cholesterol levels lower the risk of death, compared to less intensive treatment? Not according to a review of the science. The slide above was shown at the recent American College of Cardiology conference, as tweeted by a Yale cardiologist. This is the same negative result as shown in the first hard endpoint trial of the super-hyped PCSK9 inhibitors. They did not stop any death from heart disease either, in fact the trend was in the opposite direction. If even more drugs is not the answer, what is? Perhaps lifestyle modification to reduce metabolic risk factors like low HDL, elevated blood sugars, high blood pressure and excess weight? If so, low carb could be a good option. Just removing the food that turns into sugar in the body (carbohydrates) is a far more targeted and thus likely more effective approach.
