Roughly 100 million Americans have diabetes or prediabetes and in the past five years, the spendings on diabetes drugs in the US have more than doubled. Now several independent health care clinics are trying to stop this drug trend. The Fresh Food Farmacy program being tested by Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania educates and offers their patients free nutritious meals that can lower diabetes treatments costs by 80%. Instead of relying solely on drugs to manage the disease, doctors are writing prescriptions for certain patients to enter its Fresh Food Farmacy program The elite triathlete Sami Inkinen teamed up with a doctor and a scientist and founded Virta Health after managing his own prediabetes with a ketogenic diet. Virta connects patients with doctors to help implement a keto diet and to monitor their biomarkers daily. The company is working to expand to more coverage from insurers and employers, with the goal of reversing diabetes in 100 million people by 2025

Dave had been eating unhealthily for about 30 years and had tried various diets without any success. When his weight had ballooned up to 249 lbs (113 kg) and he had several other physical problems he decided it was time to stop yo-yo dieting. Not long after he found the keto diet: I am a 68-year-old male from Chesterfield, VA. For most of my life, I have either worked crazy hours or did crazy travel. Consequently, I did not eat healthily, particularly in the last 30 years. I have tried a lot of diets. I would lose weight but seemed to never be able to sustain staying on the diet. My weight ballooned up to 249 lbs (113 kg) two years ago (that is the before picture that I sent). I managed to cut back on my eating and got down to about 235 lbs (106 kg). Very low-carbohydrate diets for management of diabetes have undoubtedly gained more and more popularity in recent years and the acceptance has grown. At the American Diabetes Association’s 78th Scientific Sessions, the ballroom filled up with a huge crowd when it was time for two presentations on a very low-carb diet (VLCD) for diabetes. Dr. Jeannie Tay and Dr. Martin I. de Bock who gave the presentations explained their studies on how a low-carb diet can help reverse and manage diabetes. Dr. Tay stated that a very low carbohydrate diet offers a considerable advantage over a high-carbohydrate approach for patients with type 2 diabetes. It is a good diet to have if you have diabetes, and the data support that. This symposium generated a lot of attention in both social media channels and at the meeting. New government proposal to fight child obesity in the UK

Children in the UK are among the most overweight and obese in the EU. 22% of children in England are overweight or obese when they start school at age four or five. The percentage increases to 34% when it’s time to start primary school. A major problem and treating illnesses related to the issue, like type 2 diabetes and cancer, is estimated to cost the UK economy £27bn a year. The government’s Childhood Obesity Plan has come up with a proposal with the intention to halve childhood obesity in England by 2030. The new measures are tougher than previous ones that were widely criticized for being too weak. Sweet snacks sold at checkouts will be banned, tighter restrictions on junk food ads on TV and online, and mandatory calorie labeling on restaurant menus are all part of the new proposal. When Samuel was 18 years old, he was diagnosed with Bechterew’s disease and was put on aggressive treatment to treat the pain in his hip and lumbar spine. But he suffered severe side effects from the medication, and started researching alternative ways to treat the autoimmune condition. Four years later, he is off all medications thanks to an anti-inflammatory diet. Now he will take part in a 200-mile (300 km) bicycle race in Sweden, for the Dietary Science Foundation. You can read his touching story in the link below. It is well worth a read. The medicine that Samuel Backman, 22, was prescribed for Bechterew’s disease gave him brain fog. When it was at its worst, he could collapse in the middle of the day, hardly able to move.
