The Warburg Effect refers to the fact that cancer cells, somewhat counter intuitively, prefers fermentation as a source of energy rather than the more efficient mitochondrial pathway of oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos). We discussed this in our previous post. In normal tissues, cells may either use OxPhos which generates 36 ATP or anaerobic glycolysis which gives you 2 ATP. Anaerobic means ‘without oxygen’ and glycolysis means ‘burning of glucose’. For the same 1 glucose molecule, you can get 18 times more energy using oxygen in the mitochondrion compared to anaerobic glycolysis. Normal tissues only use this less efficient pathway in the absence of oxygen – eg. muscles during sprinting. This creates lactic acid which causes the ‘muscle burn’. However, cancer is different. Even in the presence of oxygen (hence aerobic as opposed to anaerobic), it uses a less efficient method of energy generation (glycolysis, not phosphorylation). This is found in virtually all...

Satisfying soups don't have to be diet-destroyers, and this healthier twist on classic chicken noodle soup is a formidable replacement for its carb-laden inspiration.

Nutrition (per serving)

Protein: 32g

3 chopped leeks
Salt and pepper, to taste
3 garlic cloves, sliced
6-8 cups chicken broth
1 lb cooked chicken, chopped
Small handful fresh thyme, chopped
1 package fresh zucchini zoodles
How to make it 

Cook leeks in a small amount of chicken broth.  

Add salt, pepper, and three garlic cloves and sauté until garlic softens.

Add in remaining chicken broth, chicken and thyme and simmer 20 minutes.

Add in zucchini "noodles" and cook 5-10 minutes, until desired tenderness.

Start your day with this diet-friendly, filling meal.

Nutrition 

Protein: 18g

1 microwave bag of cauliflower rice
½ cup + 3 Tbsp liquid egg whites
Salt and pepper, to taste
Handful of chopped fresh tarragon (or your favorite herb)
How to make it 

Microwave cauliflower rice per package directions. Drain and allow to cool.

Thoroughly mix cauliflower with egg whites, salt, and pepper. 

Heat a nonstick pan over medium heat. Add egg white/cauliflower mixture and flatten to cover the entire bottom of the pan.

Allow to cook 3-4 minutes, then fold or stir like you're scrambling eggs.

Remove from heat and fold in the fresh herbs.

First some quick background: The total standing so far, according to the Public Health Collaboration’s overview of studies, is at 29 victories for low carb (meaning a statistically significantly larger weight loss). The number of victories for low fat? A big fat zero. However, there are also 28 studies that show no statistically significant differences between the study groups, meaning they are draws. The big picture is thus 29 wins for low carb, (the same) 29 losses for low fat, and then a big bunch of draws. Even though he’d much rather play in the biggest game of the year, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn't missed out on enjoying the Super Bowl LII experience.

“There’s nothing like the Super Bowl atmosphere,” Rodgers told Men’s Fitness. “You bring in a lot of people, some great energy, and some really great fan bases to the city.”

Rodgers, the Men's Fitness September 2017 cover star, knows his way around the big event after leading the Packers to a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, which was held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.
