Kellie has lost 187 pounds (85 kg) and reversed type 2 diabetes with a keto diet and intermittent fasting. And as if that wasn’t fantastic enough, a test for lupus, an autoimmune disease which previously made her bedridden, came back negative after the diet switch! Her whole family is now eating keto, and her husband and son have also transformed their health. This is their story: Dr. Andreas, I stumbled upon Diet Doctor early on in my journey in 2016. I was 340 lbs (154 kg) and bedridden from lupus. I was a 12-year vegan following the 80/10/10 principal and fruitarian for six months. My weight sky rocketed and I was then diagnosed as pre-diabetic. There have been two main changes in dietary habits from the 1970s (before the obesity epidemic) until today. First, there was the change in what we were recommended to eat. Prior to 1970, there was no official government sanctioned dietary advice. You ate what your mother told you to eat. With the publication of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, we were told to cut the fat in our diets way down and replace that with carbohydrates, which might have been OK if it was all broccoli and kale, but might not be OK if it was all white bread and sugar. But the other major change was in when we eat. There were no official recommendations on this, but nevertheless, eating patterns changed significantly, and I believe contributed equally to the obesity crisis. From the NHANES study in 1977, most people ate 3 times per day – breakfast, lunch and dinner. I grew up in the 1970s. There were no snacks. If you wanted an after school snack, your mom said “No, you’ll ruin your dinner”....

The Medieval Crusades were a series of holy wars sanctioned by the Latin Church. It seems incongruous today, but the Catholic religion was used as justification to bring war, death and destruction to thousands of innocent people. The last time I checked, the Bible did not exactly espouse the use of brute force to subjugate other peoples. I don’t recall any passage in there that says “We will save the heathens even if we need to kill them to do it.” I’m reminded of this same incongruity every time I read about some person in the media trying to ‘debunk’ some procedure or other. They perceive themselves to be ‘myth busters’, but in reality, they are selling the same pseudo-science they pretend they are ‘debunking’. Normal digestion All foods are composed of a combination of three major components, called macronutrients: Carbohydrates Protein Fat Each of these macronutrients are composed of smaller functional units. Ethical approval has been granted and the project has been expanded: the diabetes clinic at Uppsala University Hospital will also participate in the project. This week US researchers reported that a strict low-carbohydrate diet can help people with type 1 diabetes stabilize their blood sugar, with no apparent serious side effects. The New York Times published an article about the study: How a Low-Carb Diet Might Aid People With Type 1 Diabetes. This is one of many studies that show how a low-carbohydrate diet can help people with type 1 diabetes to gain control of their blood sugar, but these studies all have methodological weaknesses.
