The Globe and Mail: The Big Squeeze: Inside the fight over juice in Canada’s food guide The report says an intense lobbying effort by the beverage industry is trying to make it seem like a grassroots movement is defending juice as both a healthy food choice and as an important source of jobs for Canadians. The current Canadian Food Guide, not updated since 2007, says that half a cup of 100% juice can be a substitute for a piece of whole fruit. The Canadian government has announced proposals to remove 100% juice from the food guide and to require prominent labeling of the sugar content in all juice. To survive, early humans needed to store food energy as body fat to survive the hard times. If we did not have an efficient storage and retrieval method of food energy, we would have died long ago. After food availability became more reliable, most human cultures and religions specified prescribed voluntary periods of fasting. For example, Jesus was said to have fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, and many subsequent followers have undertaken this themselves without significant health damage. Many Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan, and also regularly twice a week during the rest of the year. When he feel asleep on a friends gathering after a big meal of junk food, he woke up the next morning with the knowledge that he just had to change. He started keto that same day. The new ruling allows manufacturers whose oil products contain more than 70% oleic acid to choose whether to have a specially-worded label for consumers. They evaluated 3,800 subjects with a mean age of 69 years, performing extensive neuropsychological and cognitive ability testing. They found that the diagnosis of dementia and cognitive impairment correlated with increasing age, decreasing education level, diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, and being an ApoE4 carrier. After controlling for all these factors, they also found that those in the highest tertile of LDL-C (>142 mg/dL or 3.7 mmol/L) had a 50% lower incidence of dementia than those in the lowest tertile (<110 mg/dL or 2.9 mmol/L). On a lighter note, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers had a sense of humor when briefing the media about a crime characterized as “a little unusual”: stolen butter. Two Vancouver men have egg on their face after being arrested for allegedly stealing a shopping cart full of butter worth more than $1,400.00. …The two men, a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old partner, are facing charges of theft under $5,000.00. The 23-year-old is also a suspect in at least three other butter thefts around Metro Vancouver in recent months. An employee actually recognized one of these suspects because he had a bit of a reputation as a butter thief, says Corporal McLaughlin. When Richard couldn’t fit in his work uniform anymore he knew he had to lose weight. He started the 2-week challenge back in January and he shares his story on what has happened since: I started my keto journey on January 1, 2018. I used Diet Doctor’s 2-week challenge to get started and to discover what this new lifestyle was about. Originally my goal was to simply lose weight and inches around the belly. I work as a seasonal National Park Ranger during the summer and I literally could no longer get my uniform pants on so the situation had become critical! I was reporting to Grand Teton National Park the first part of May so I had about four months to get into my trousers…the clock was ticking. Anovulatory cycles Anovulatory cycles are menstrual cycles where no ovulation occurs. 70% of anovulatory infertility is related to PCOS.During follicular arrest, no dominant follicle grows large enough to ovulate. Without a mature egg, conception cannot occur, leading to the devastating realization that one cannot have a baby. During normal menstruation, progesterone is produced after ovulation by the remnant of the dominant follicle. Without ovulation, this does not occur and there is too little progesterone leading to heavy periods and irregularity. This leads clinically to the irregular cycles found in PCOS. Almost all women will experience some anovulatory cycles in their lifetimes, especially during puberty and menopause. However, the underlying cause of the anovulation is the excessive insulin and testosterone once again. And it once again demonstrated it has blinders on when it comes to lifestyle interventions to treat and prevent type 2 diabetes. Despite what the sugary beverage and processed snack food companies want us to believe, all calories are not created equal. A new study from Harvard shows that individuals following a low-carbohydrate (20% of total calories) diet burn between 209 and 278 more calories at rest (each day) than those on a high-carbohydrate (60% of total calories) diet. So the type of calories we eat really does matter. The New York Times: How a low-carb diet might help you maintain a healthy weight This isn’t the first study to investigate this topic, but it is likely the best. The current study was a meticulously controlled, randomized trial, lasting 20 weeks. Even more impressive, the study group provided all the food for participants, over 100,000 meals and snacks costing $12 million for the entire study!
