Looking back over the last 40 years, it’s hard to understand how we could have been so gullible. We believed that fat, and more specifically saturated fat (found primarily in animal foods), was thought to increase cholesterol and cause heart disease. Instead, we should switch to ‘heart healthy’ vegetable oils, like cottonseed, corn, safflower and soy oils. But recent evidence suggests this was a Faustian bargain. The industrially processed seed oils were much, much worse. It was all a terrible mistake that began with Crisco. Cotton plantations for fabric were cultivated in the United States as early as 1736. Prior to this, it was largely an ornamental plant. At first, most cotton was home-spun into garments, but the success of the crop meant that some could be exported to England. From a modest 600 pounds of cotton in 1784, it grew to over 200,000 by 1790. The invention of the cotton-gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 led to a staggering 40,000,000 pounds of cotton production. ...

If you want to lose weight, the answer might be as easy as changing the hour of when you have your breakfast and dinner. A new small 10-week study on time-restricted eating, led by Dr. Jonathan Johnston from the University of Surrey, investigated the impact of meal times on dietary intake, body composition and blood risk markers for diabetes and heart disease. And yes, when participants increased the time they spent fasting they did lose weight: Participants in a trial who delayed their first meal of the day by 90 minutes and brought forward the last meal by 90 minutes lost more than twice the amount of body fat after 10 weeks compared to a control group, despite not cutting down on the amount of food they consumed. Have the dangers of sugar finally caught up with us? The latest research from The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) reveals that sugar is now the biggest concern for consumers. The latest survey shows that more than 55% of the respondents are worried about sugar consumption. Other previous concerns for the average UK citizen has been food prices and food safety. The latter is still a top food worry but UK consumers have also reported high trust levels in labeling regulation. The UK government introduced a tax on hig-sugar beverages this April but the consumers want to take it even further, they want the government to extend the tax to include both biscuits and confectionery as well. Research shows that adding tax on high-sugar items are raising awareness among common people which, in the long run, will hopefully change peoples’ eating habits. The new study suggesting that a low-carb diet might decrease life expectancy was very popular in the media last week. Cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra was invited to the BBC World News to comment on the situation and he pointed out the exaggerations of the media as well as the shortcomings of the study. To someone who analyses research in detail over the years about what constitutes the healthiest diet, this headline/claim that suggests that eating a low-carb diet shortens lifespan is completely and totally false. Any suggestion that it does, I would describe as a miscarriage of science. One of the reasons for that is this type of studies what we call observational studies. According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans a diverse diet is an important part of a healthy diet, based on very little hard science. The American Heart Association (AHA) now disagrees with these governmental dietary guidelines. The AHA instead suggest that advising people to eat a diverse diet can instead lead to greater intake of processed and sugary foods, potentially resulting in weight gain and obesity. In the study, researchers fed mice (!) a keto diet for three days (!), and then ran a glucose tolerance test. They noticed that while the mice on a keto diet had a lower fasting blood glucose, it got higher after the glucose tolerance test and there were signs of a reduced effect of insulin compared to mice on regular mouse chow. Do you need some daily carbs? A new study suggesting that a low-carb diet could shorten your life is all over media today. As usual when it comes to this kind of news piece, it is only based on food questionnaires (from 1987 to 1989 in this case), it’s just a statistical correlation, and it can’t – as the authors themselves say – prove anything. Furthermore, as has been found in similar studies before, the correlation is not to low carb per se. Because people who eat a low-carb diet based mainly on plant sources have a longer average life than people eating higher-carb diets. Canadians are struggling under the burden of nutritional diseases, like obesity and type 2 diabetes. These diseases have exploded since the low-fat, high-carb dietary guidelines were issued in the 80’s. We now know that these guidelines were based on bad science. The Canadian Clinicians for Therapeutic Nutrition (CCTN) are advocating for new dietary guidelines based on stronger evidence. This is needed since, for example, Health Canada still wants to put warning labels on natural whole foods that are high in saturated fat and salt which may lead Canadians to choose refined processed foods instead. A common misconception is that people in Asia are generally thinner compared to people in the Western countries. It might have been true once but times have changed. A new New York Times article describes the obesity wave in Thailand : One in three Thai men and 40% of women are now obese. The country is now the second-heaviest in Asia, after Malaysia. Buddhist monks are at the forefront of the problem in Thailand where nearly half are obese. How is that possible? In Buddhist Thai tradition monks are given food by almsgivers, which secure them good karma in this life and next. Back in the day, monks were given whole foods but today they mostly get sugary drinks and generally storebought packaged items high in sugar. In June, officials from Thailand’s Public Health Department urged laypeople to offer healthier alms to monks, who pour from temples in their saffron robes each morning to roam the streets collecting their meals in the Buddhist tradition.
