If you have type 2 diabetes, but are not taking insulin, should you test your blood sugar? Last week, a study published in JAMA looked at the costs of unnecessary blood sugar testing in patients with type 2 diabetes who are not at risk of hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar levels). The researchers looked at two years of claims data and found that one in seven patients at low risk of hypoglycemia made three or more claims for glucose monitor test strips, at an average insurance cost of $325 per person per year. The authors conclude: Despite a lack of clinical evidence and being identified as a low-value service by the Choosing Wisely initiative, a substantial percentage of patients with type 2 diabetes may still be inappropriately self-monitoring blood glucose.
