One third of the world’s population are now overweight, and one in ten suffer from obesity, a new study finds. So how come we ended up here? Thankfully, the study deviates from the current dogma by (more accurately) moving the blame from ‘too little exercise’ to the excessive consumption of low-quality fast food: The study largely did not go deeply into the causes of obesity, but the authors said the growing accessibility of inexpensive, nutrient-poor packaged foods was probably a major factor and the general slowdown in physical activity was probably not.
